How to open an IFC file without Revit

Opening an IFC is not the same as editing it

2. Open the file in a second independent IFC viewer.
3. Check whether the model uses a supported IFC version.
4. Ask the sender to open the exact delivered file on another device.
5. If several viewers fail, request a new export from the source model.

Do not rename another file type to .ifc. Changing the extension does not convert its contents.

The model opens, but nothing is visible

The model may be located far from the current view, contain objects with unusual coordinates or have visibility settings that hide part of the geometry.

Use the viewer’s command to fit the complete model to the screen. Then check the model tree to see whether objects were loaded.

If the tree contains elements but no geometry is visible, test the file in another viewer and ask the author to check the export coordinates and geometry.

The model is very slow

Large file size is only one possible cause. IFC performance can also be affected by:

• highly detailed objects;
• duplicated geometry;
• unnecessary elements;
• manufacturer components with excessive detail;
• stray objects located far from the main model.

Try closing unnecessary browser tabs or applications and reopen the file. If the model remains difficult to use in several viewers, the source export may need to be simplified.

Can you open IFC without installing software?

Yes. A browser-based IFC viewer can open and process the model without a traditional desktop installation.

• you received a model but do not own BIM authoring software;

Can you convert an IFC file to Revit?
